Creating Halo cosplay with Making Flof and his FORMART 2

Discover how artists like Making Flof use vacuum forming to create realistic, see-through cosplay visors and props. Learn how a vacuum former can level up your costume projects.

Cosplay artists are known for combining a wide variety of materials and techniques to bring their costumes and props to life. While tools like 3D printers and laser cutters have become staples in the world of cosplay, adding a vacuum former to your workshop can unlock an entirely new level of creativity and precision.

Vacuum forming makes it possible to shape parts in unique ways, produce multiple identical copies with ease, and create curved, see-through components - something that’s often difficult to achieve with other methods. For cosplayers, this makes vacuum forming the perfect solution for making visors, helmet covers, and other parts that need to look professional and fit perfectly.

A fantastic example of this in action is a YouTube Short by French maker Making Flof. In this project, Florian 3D printed a mould of the visor on Master Chief’s helmet from the Halo games. Using his MY YARD desktop vacuum former, he shaped a clear PET sheet over the mould to create a replacement visor that matches the original design.

To achieve that authentic sci-fi look, Florian then dyed the PET visor and gave it a reflective chrome finish. The result is a replacement visor that looks just like the one in the game, but thanks to the clear PET, Florian can actually see through the visor while wearing the helmet.

This is just one of many ways that vacuum forming can expand what’s possible for costume makers and prop builders. From creating custom moulds for armour to forming unique shapes for masks, shields, and props, a vacuum former is a versatile tool that pairs perfectly with other digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing and laser cutting.
