Seeing the recent internet trend of using AI to create starter packs with figurines and accessories, French digital maker Florian, a.k.a. Making Flof, decided to make a real starter pack for himself.
Florian, also known as Making Flof, is a French digital maker whose creativity truly knows no bounds. With a passion for graphic design and hands-on digital fabrication, he explores everything from laser cutting to 3D printing to create quirky, pop culture-inspired projects.
Inspired by the online trend where people use artificial intelligence to generate images of fictional “starter packs” (complete with action figures and accessories), Florian decided to take things one step further. Rather than leaving his AI starter pack in the digital realm, he brought it to life; turning it into a tangible, physical creation.
The process began with Florian taking photos of himself, which he uploaded into ChatGPT, asking it to imagine what his action figure might look like. From the AI-generated image, he created a 3D model using various design software. Once happy with the design, he printed the figure on his 3D printer bringing the virtual concept into the real world.
He repeated this process for each accessory that would accompany the figurine in the starter pack, designing and printing every item with precision.
But no action figure is complete without proper packaging! To recreate the classic look of retail toy packs, Florian designed a custom cardboard backdrop. He then created blister moulds by 3D printing forms slightly larger than the individual items. Using his MY YARD FORMART 2 desktop vacuum former, he vacuum formed a PET plastic sheet over these moulds to create the transparent casing.
Once the plastic shapes were cooled and cut to size, Florian assembled the final packaging by gluing the plastic parts onto the cardboard backing - just like a professionally packaged toy.
In the end, his AI starter pack became a fully realised, physical product: a one-of-a-kind tribute to his digital persona, made using a clever combination of AI, 3D printing, and vacuum forming.
